PSW Support for Children with Multiple Disabilities in Ontario

Several Ontario and federal programs provide financial support that can offset the cost of PSW care for children with disabilities. Families should explore all of the following:

Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD) Ontario provides financial support to families through the ACSD program to help cover some of the extra costs of caring for a child with a severe disability. Ontario is increasing the maximum monthly ACSD payment by 1.9% effective July 2026. This funding can be applied toward private PSW care costs. Apply through your local Ontario MCCSS office. Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) ODSP provides income support and disability-related benefits for eligible Ontarians. The 2026 inflation-based increase of 1.9% takes effect July 1, 2026. Special Services at Home (SSH) Ontario's Special Services at Home program provides funding for families of children and adults with developmental disabilities or physical disabilities to purchase respite and support services in the home. PSW support purchased through Essential Staff may be eligible under this program. Contact your local MCCSS office or Developmental Services Ontario to apply.

Ontario Health at Home Some children with complex medical needs may be eligible for publicly funded PSW support through Ontario Health at Home following a medical referral. Funded hours are often limited Essential Staff can supplement publicly funded care with private support.

Private Health Insurance Check your family's employer group benefits plan some plans cover home care and personal support services for dependents with disabilities. Essential Staff can provide the clinical documentation your insurer requires for a claim.
